What is World Environment Day and why is it is important?

Every June 5th, millions of people of governments, businesses, and communities from across the planet engage to celebrate World Environment Day by demonstrating initiatives that help protect the planet. This year the event will complete 50 years under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and hosted by Sweden raising awareness and celebrating environmental action. Aspiring to drive change through their support for businesses and governments.

How to celebrate Our Environment Day?

As per the UN organization, commenting on the event, the Earth is in a state of emergency that threatens future generations; With global warming worsening, the goal is to keep Earth's temperature below 1.5 degrees Celsius this century to help halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

They asserted that without making sustainable living the first and last option across the globe, exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines would increase by 50 percent within the decade besides the explosion of the plastic waste flow into aquatic ecosystems.

By making the options towards sustainability available and attractive for people and businesses to make better decisions. Not only at the individual level, but also in governments and corporates, including making the right choices on how and where our money is invested. Especially when it comes to sectors like power generation and global trade and transportation systems.

As the actions of larger entities can have a transformational impact, to rationally control the production and consumption behaviors. Through rewriting the rules and discovering new horizons.

World Environment Day 2022 is an opportunity to make a difference and contribution to the larger aspired objective with “Only One Earth” as the theme of the day that focuses on living sustainably in harmony with nature.

UAE sets a leading environmental example to preserve the planet

The World Environment Day 2022 comes in line with the priorities of the UAE's 2030 environmental vision, announced this year in the previous April, to achieve integration between the three aspects of sustainable development, summarized in reducing the effects of climate change, purifying the air, as well as managing water resources and waste. From these priorities emerged a primary objective that aspires to improve environmental conditions without compromising the economic aspirations of 2030.

It is worth noting on World Environment Day that by launching the third edition of the Arab Digital Economy Index in June 2022, the UAE’s leadership continues in digital transformation in the region; striving toward a clean economy. We value that The UAE remains steadfast on its path towards achieving the desired environmental goal by 2030 to preserve the earth as one of our homelands altogether.

This coincided with its global leadership in the renewable energy and sustainability sector, especially during the era of the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, may God have mercy on him, by adopting the strategic initiative for climate neutrality by 2050.
